Two things on my desk

A black cube and a wooden plaque. Both came out of a question I kept asking on the Chaos Studio team: we broke the thing on purpose, but did it actually survive? One answer turned into a US patent. The other won a hackathon.

US Patent: Automated Resiliency Validation

The cube has a gold medallion set into it with my name and the name of the invention. Microsoft gives these out when a patent is granted. It's a slightly surreal thing to hold, since the idea only ever existed as software.

It came out of my time as PM for Azure Chaos Studio, from 2023 to 2025. Chaos engineering is good at breaking things on purpose. The part everyone hand-waves is what happens next. You inject the fault, someone watches a dashboard, and if nothing obviously catches fire you call it a pass. Automated Resiliency Validation is about doing that check automatically, so the system has to prove it survived instead of being assumed to.

Microsoft Global Hackathon 2025, 1st place

1st place · global executive challenge · judged under Scott Guthrie

First place in the global executive challenge at the Microsoft Global Hackathon 2025, judged under Azure CEO Scott Guthrie. The project was an MCP-based scanner that looks at AI-generated apps and finds the places they will fall over. In 2025 the fastest way to ship something fragile was to let an agent write it and never ask what happens when a dependency goes down.

It's the same question as the patent, pointed at a newer problem. The project went on to inspire the Azure Copilot Resiliency Agent, now in preview in the Azure portal, which helps teams design, assess, and fix the resiliency of their Azure workloads.
